Formed in 1975, The Black Police Association of Greater Dallas (BPA-Dallas) is an organization of African American peace officers and criminal justice practitioners. The 550 members of BPA-Dallas are dedicated to bridging the gaps – both real and perceptual – that exist between the African American community and law enforcement as institutions through mutual trust, respect, cooperation and positive interaction.
I was recently nominated to the position of Elections Committee Chairman for BPA-Dallas. My responsibility was to organize, run and execute our bi-annual election process. In addition to the traditional duties of overseeing voting and ensuring that our association bylaws were being followed, the committee and I were challenged to make voting more accessible for our members.
In the past, members had to visit the BPA-Dallas office to cast their vote. The committee and I wanted to give our members the option of voting in a more convenient manner. The consensus was to employ an online voting system – the challenge was to select a trusted election services vendor with an electronic election application that was easy to use.
Another member of the election committee did the initial research of identifying four different companies that could help us implement online voting. Out of the four vendors we contacted, Survey & Ballot Systems (SBS) seemed like the only company that was genuinely interested in helping us and was the lone organization who took the time to fully understand the project by consulting with us over the phone. BPA-Dallas selected SBS as our election management vendor and opted to use their online voting software, myDirectVote®.
Our SBS account manager was always available for questions or conversations, which put me at ease and bolstered my confidence towards the Internet voting system we were putting in place.
During the technical implementation of the process, SBS support services continued the first-class treatment that I had come to expect. It was great to have a dedicated support person from SBS assigned to the election. Even as a few election issues arose on our side, I never felt worried or flustered. My confidence never wavered that SBS would resolve the concern. The system (myDirectVote) worked great for our first online election. We had rave reviews from our members.
Everyone involved in the process could not have done anything else to make my experience any more enjoyable or satisfying. Being a huge Oakland Raiders football fan, “commitment to excellence” is a mantra I live by – and SBS obviously does as well.
