A motion is a formal request that either a board member or members make during a meeting. A person makes a motion to start a discussion and, ultimately, bring the issue to a vote. Most motions follow a structured process, like being shared openly, being seconded, and being debated before a vote. Organizational bylaws often outline exactly how a member can bring a motion forward, who can second it, and more.
