Removal for Cause
Last Updated on June 16, 2026 by Hannah Seeley
In rare cases, board members or officers may violate their responsibilities. If they refuse to resign, the organization can initiate a removal for cause, where it removes leaders who violate its policies. The misconduct or violation could be anything from an unintentional (but serious) breach of confidentiality to intentional collusion. Regardless of the reason, removal for cause usually requires a formal vote by members.
